The Vanuatu government has launched an investigation into the death of an American tourist who died earlier this month while diving near the northern island of Espiritu Santo.

Thirty three year old Laila Osunsade had been diving off one of the island's main diving attractions, the wreck of the American wartime troopship, the SS President Coolidge.

She was on a diving trip with a local operator, Aquamarine Santo.

Laila Osunsade's body was sent back to New Zealand where she had been working as a doctor and her funeral is due to be held tomorrow.
