Enewetak awaiting Marshalls drought help

3:21 pm on 15 May 2013

Efforts are underway to get emergency supplies to the Marshall Islands atoll of Enewetak which the government has declared to be in a state of disaster, because of a prolonged drought.

The government's chief secretary, Casten Nemra, says it is the only atoll the government hasn't managed to physically assess or get any aid to because of its distance from Majuro.

He says despite speaking with the island's leaders over the phone, a ground assessment is needed.

Mr Nemra says the government will deliver fresh water, food, medical supplies and probably a solar-powered desalination unit.

"On Enewetak, it's in the farthest north west of the Marshall Islands and that is the remaining atoll for us to assess."

Casten Nemra says officials are in talks with an airline about a relief flight.

He says with so many atolls and islands so spread out, officials chose to begin delivering emergency aid and water to the more densely populated islands.
