Renewed call for Solomons police chief to go

3:37 pm on 30 May 2013

The head of a Solomon Islands group representing the interests of people from Malaita province has renewed calls for the country's acting police commissioner to step down.

The Solomon Star reports Charles Dausabea of the Malaita Maasina Forum as saying the release of a Chinese businessman accused of money laundering was illegal.

The paper has reported top government officials ordered Xu Qiang's release two weeks ago after he was taken in for questioning.

Mr Dausabea says the acting commissioner, Juanita Matanga, should step aside over the issue.

He says the businessman's release is suspicious, political and raises more questions than answers.

The police say their decision to release Mr Xu was based on established police procedures.

He has since been charged and is due to appear in court next week.
