American Samoa police detain man over death of a Tongan national

Police in American Samoa have detained a man suspected of beating a Tongan national to death while his young son watched with horror.

Witnesses say the deceased was allegedly beaten to death with a crowbar by a young adult who lived with the family of the victim.

Family members say the dead man's 7 year-old son witnessed the entire incident which happened yesterday morning.

The victim's wife said by the time she got to the scene, the suspect had fled.

KHJ News understands the police detained the suspect not long after yesterday's tragedy.

The head of the police criminal investigation division Lavata'i Taase Sagapolutele declined to comment on the case.
