Pitcairn Island sends out survey to lure diaspora home

Pitcairn Island is set to ask generations of its descendents whether they would consider moving back to the remote Pacific Island.

The population of the British overseas territory has plummeted in recent years to only 50 permanent residents, but previously peaked at 233.

The administration has prepared a survey to all descendents and former residents to see what might motivate them to return.

The Pitcairn Tourism Coordinator, Heather Menzies, who made the choice to settle on Pitcairn seven years ago, says travel to the island may take days, but modern comforts and technology make it less remote than it used to be.

She says re-population has become an urgent issue.

"We are a very small population and an ageing population so clearly if we are to be able to sustain ourselves over the next few generations we have to look seriously now at repopulation."
