Samoa's Head of State Tuiatua Tupua Tamasese Efi is advocating for a return of glottal marks for the Samoan language.

In his keynot speech at the opening of the American Samoa Education Summit he said it was necessary to return to the use of glottal marks for the Samoan language.

Glottal marks were removed years ago but have recently been introduced in Samoa.

Renowned for his mastery of the Samoan language, the head of State said it was the responsibility of leaders to preserve the Samoan language and pass it on to future generations.

He said the language is tied to traditions and culture and if traditions die, the language will also perish.
