Solomons' Malaita airport still closed over maintenance dispute

12:10 pm on 23 December 2013

The airport in Solomon Islands Malaita province remains closed more than a week after aggrieved landowners placed logs across the runway.

Owners of the Gwaunaru'u land near the provincial capital, Auki, closed the airport in protest at a breach of their agreement with the aviation ministry.

The airport land is already the subject of a High Court case following last year's protracted closure over a dispute between landowners.

The Solomon Star reports the Malaita provincial government member Martin Fini blaming the aviation permanent secretary Francis Lomo for the situation.

But in an earlier report from the University of Hawaii's East-West Centre Mr Lomo denies landowners are responsible for the closure, saying it is the result of disagreement between Mr Fini and community groups over maintenance work.
