Tuvalu government asks Fiji for teachers

4:17 pm on 15 January 2014

The Tuvalu government has asked the Fiji government for retired school teachers to educate primary school students in maths and English.

The Tuvalu government has submitted a request to the Fiji government under the Fiji Volunteer Scheme for nine teachers.

The request was raised after a series of meetings between the permanent secretary of the Fiji Public Service Commission, Parmesh Chand, officials from the Tuvalu ministry of education and the High Commissioner Lutelu Favae.

Mr Chand says the request is also to process the logistics of identifying teachers prior to signing a memorandum of agreement in two weeks' time.

He says the priority and area of need identified by the ministry of education in Tuvalu is primary education.
