New group emerges to contest Cooks election

A former Cook Islands cabinet minister is forming a new political organisation to fight the upcoming election.

Teina Bishop resigned from Cabinet and was then dumped by the ruling Cook Islands Party last month.

He says he resigned because he had not been kept in the loop about the Government's plans to call an election seven months early - on July the 9th.

Mr Bishop says his political movement, Cook Islands One, will take a new approach to politics.

"I am limiting the candidacy of our movement at eight because our intention is not to get the 13 to establish a government rather a supporting group of the government of the day - whichever government comes."

Teina Bishop says he is not fazed by a lengthy police investigation accusing him of bribery and corruption during his term as marine resources minister.
