Vanuatu MP says delay in parliament adds up

12:04 pm on 19 November 2014

Vanuatu MP Willie Jimmy says a further delay in parliament will end up costing the taxpayer unnecessary money.

The Speaker has adjourned the second and last ordinary session of parliament of 2014 until Monday next week.

He says MPs need more time to read 21 bills that are listed to be debated.

But Mr Jimmy says the five day adjournment will be costly.

"From what I understand it's 5,000 Vatu for subsistence allowance and 2000 vatu for the sitting but there will be no sitting. So there will be an allowance of 5,000 vatu per day for all the members of parliament."

Mr Jimmy estimates over $US13,000 in allowances will be paid over the next week.
