Fiji's ousted Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase says the government has refused to explain why it won't pay him the pension he is due.

Mr Qarase says a year ago the Prime Minister's office wrote saying he would receive all his entitlements including the prime ministerial pension he's been due since his ousting eight years ago.

In 2010 the regime reinstated pensions to those who had criticised the interim regime but Mr Qarase says he was not included.

He says the pension amounts to at least 350,000 US dollars.

"Up to today I have not received one cent even though I have been following up on that letter for quite some time and I've never received a response. I have worked through a third party to discuss with the Permanent Secretary of that office. Initially there was positive reaction but it faded away for some reason."

Mr Qarase says he suggested the opposition raise the issue in parliament during the debate on the budget this week.

The opposition MP Biman Prasad accused the government of continuing to victimise Mr Qarase.
