Sport: Win or bust for Fiji hockey teams

11:28 am on 11 December 2014

The equation is simple for the Fiji men's and women's hockey teams: beat Papua New Guinea on Thursday and a place in Round 2 of the World League in Singapore is theirs.

The Fiji men warmed up for the winners takes all clash win a come from behind victory over defending Oceania Pacific Cup champions Australia Country.

The Australians had led 2-0 before Fiji fought back to send the game to a shoot-out.

It was left to rookie goalkeeper Lemeki Tubusoi to be the hero, with the Tailevu man blocking two shots to inspire the hosts to a 4-2 triumph, and helping them retain the Hector Smith Trophy played for between the two sides.

Head coach Shaun Corrie says it was an ideal build-up for today's World League decider.

"The boys have been training hard and we've been working on our shootout also. We really needed the win to get into the final so the boys dug deep and got two goals in the last six minutes and then came back stronger in the shootout. We need to take each game as it comes and not underestimate any teams. PNG is quite fit and quite disruptive at times so we will play a bit more structured and stick to the gameplan."

Fiji's hopes of defending the women's Oceania Pacific Cup title are over after a 2-1 loss to Australia Country, their third in four games.

In other results from Wednesday, the Vanuatu women pipped Samoa 1-0 for their first win of the tournament and the New Zealand President's XI remain unbeaten in both the men's and women's competitions after thrashing Samoa 13-1 and Papua New Guinea 4-0 respectively.
