Sport: Samoan athlete wins Heisman Trophy

A Samoan athlete, who was born in Hawaii, has won American college football's top award, the Heisman Trophy.

Oregon State University quarterback Marcus Mariota beat out two other finalists when the winner was announced during the award ceremony over the weekend in New York City.

Mariota's father, Toa who was born in American Samoa, was present during the ceremony along with his mother and brother,

In his acceptance speech, Mariota thanked Hawaii for teaching him humility and respect, while he also had a message for young Polynesians.

"To the Polynesian community I hope and pray that this is only the beginning. Young Poly athletes everywhere you should take this as motivation and dream big and strive for greatness. Faafetai tele lava, god bless".
