Public hearings on controversial Guam wage law

The Guam Legislature has held public hearings on controversial Bill 436, the measure which seeks to remove senators from the Competitive Wage Act of 2014.

The Marianas Variety reports that while the bill removes the senatorial salary increase, it still will allow for the governor, lieutenant governor, cabinet members and the attorney general to retain their respective salary raises.

In a fully packed public hearing, residents took turns lambasting the recent pay increases.

Much of the testimony was emotional with one concerned citizen saying that at $85,000 US dollars a year, Guam lawmakers are the second highest compensated of all state and territorial legislatures in the United States.

He also says at over 110,000 the governor and the lieutenant governor are among the highest paid in the nation.

The earlier pay raises had boosted some salaries by more than 40%.
