American Samoa by-election in March

2:07 pm on 23 January 2015

The Election Office in American Samoa has called a special election in March to fill the House of Representative seat left vacant following the death last month of lawmaker Lemapu Suiaunoa Talo.

The constitution requires the governor to issue a writ of special election if a House seat is vacant.

With the writ now issued, the chief election officer Tuaolo Fruean has set the vote for March the 20th.

Tuaolo says nomination papers are now available and the deadline to file a candidacy is February the 6th.

In the November general election, there were only two candidates.

Lemapu, who had been in office for four years, will be laid to rest this weekend.
