The Papua New Guinea Parliament is considering a bill to force political parties to have at least 10 percent women candidates running for elections.

The Post Courier newspaper reports the changes are part of proposed amendments to the Organic Law on the Integrity of Political Parties and Candidates by the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties.

The amendments include a rule that a failure to comply would lead to the de-registration of the political party.

Since the 2002 elections, more women candidates have contested as independents with only a few endorsed by political parties.
