Extreme conditions prompt New Caledonia fire ban

1:49 pm on 6 October 2016

An extreme fire risk in the north of New Caledonia has prompted the Civil Security organisation to declare a territory-wide fire ban.

The ban exempts the use of fire for cooking in domestic situations.

The south eastern coast of the main island is also rated as veing at extreme risk, with much of the rest of the territory facing an elevated risk.

Last month, fire destroyed about ten square kilometres of vegetation on the Isle of Pines.
