Free animal clinic performs 22 surgeries in American Samoa

An American non-profit organisation has performed 22 surgeries on the first day of free animal clinics it's offering in American Samoa.

Animal Balance has teamed up with Alofa mo Meaola for a spay and neuter campaign in Pago Pago.

The group has worked predominantely with dogs in the past but has expanded its programme to include cats now.

Director of Field Operations, Meredith Hippert, said the demand for services is obvious in the territory.

"People here in American Samoa are very compassionate towards animals which is always so nice to see, coming from the outside. To really have a community sort of rally and support their animal community here and animal welfare, is just so wonderful."

Residents are also being encouraged to licence their dogs which costs five dollars.
