Taiwan plans to retain its representative office in Fiji despite Fiji closing its doors in Taipei.
A Taiwanese opposition legislator revealed this week Fiji had shut its trade office in the Taiwanese capital on May 10.
The office was a defacto embassy for Fiji which officially recognises China under the One China policy.
Taiwan's Deputy Foreign Minister Wu Chih-Chung sayid Fiji, as a small country with domestic economic considerations, was forced to make the decision.
She said Taiwan regretted its choice but would maintain its own office in Fiji.
Ms Wu said Taiwan still believed that continuing bilateral exchanges and cooperation with Fiji was important.
A spokesperson for China's Foreign Ministry Hua Chunying reiterated the "One China" principle when asked if Fiji's withdrawal was to do with pressure from China.
