There is concern in New Caledonia that from next year funding problems could leave the territory's scientists without any seismographs.
The issue is being raised in the local newspaper Les Nouvelles Caledoniennes by a scientist at the French IRD research institute in Noumea.
He said half the budget for the network has come from the New Caledonian government but it won't continue.
However, the government said this was not correct as a decision is yet to be made.
At the beginning of the week, a magnitude 7 quake struck off New Caledonia followed by dozens of aftershocks in what is seen as the area's most intensive seismic activity in almost a quarter of a century.
According to the paper, there are nine measuring stations but more would be desirable to improve warning systems.
