Following Monday's 7.5 earthquake in Hela province, there have been ongoing aftershocks, including tremors over magnitude 5 in the area.

Many landslides have been triggered in the region, and while there is no official death toll yet, dozens of people are understood to have been killed.

Anxiety is high among communities in Hela and affected neighbouring provinces of Southern Highlands, Enga and Western.

The Volcanological Observatory has moved to quell concerns that long dormant volcanoes in the area may have become active.

It said satellite images show no new activity at any old Highlands volcanoes.

According to the Observatory, the 7.5 quake was tectonic in origin, and too big to be volcanic.

It said aftershocks being felt result from adjustments of strain within the region due to the initial large quake.

"It is very unlikely a tectonic earthquake will trigger a long dormant volcano immediately" the Observatory said in a release.
