The incumbent Cook Islands Prime Minister Henry Puna has retained his seat but no party has secured a clear majority with all preliminary results from the country's general election yesterday now in.
There have been some big upsets including the deputy prime minister Teariki Heather losing his seat to Nooroa o Teariki Baker
Also beaten was Nandi Glassie, the health minister, who lost to the youngest candidate for the Democratic Party, Tehani Browne.
And the minister for agriculture Kiriau Turepu has lost his seat to Vaitoti Tupa.
According to the Cook Islands Electoral Office the Democratic Party has secured 11 seats, Mr Puna's Cook Islands Party has 10 seats, two seats have gone to independents and one seat has been secured by the One Cook Islands party.
None of the parties have secured the 13 seats needed for a clear majority in the 24 seat parliament.
Our correspondent in Rarotonga, Florence Syme-Buchanan says the scrutiny of the rolls and the final count could take up to a week to complete.
And with results so close the formation of government could take even longer.
