Mother backs ACC's push to curb newborn brain injuries

From Morning Report, 6:08 am on 13 February 2017

The ACC is leading a taskforce seeking to reduce the incidence of brain damage among newborns.

Neonatal encephalopathy or NE, is usually associated with reduced blood or oxygen supply to the brain.

The ACC accepts about ten claims for the condition each year which add as much as half a billion dollars to its liabilities.

But the condition has a human cost as well.

Suzi Paisley's son Kahn is receiving around the clock care paid for by ACC because his needs are so high.

His bedroom resembles a hospital room and he has seizures day and night.

She says his prognosis was so grim they never undertook spinal surgery and last year were forced to travel overseas to seek hormone treatment after they were refused treatment in New Zealand.

She spoke with our reporter, Catherine Hutton.
