VIDEO PREMIERE: Ed Waaka ‘Revolution’

From RNZ Music, 10:00 am on 28 November 2019

RNZ Music is proud to present the new single from Auckland singer-songwriter Ed Waaka. ‘Revolution’ is a soulful protest song that pays tribute to Māori who fought for indigenous rights during times of social upheaval.

“What if we could be, everything we were meant to be, could we change the world?”

Ed Waaka’s new single ‘Revolution, the second single from his forthcoming self-titled E.P, is a continuation of the socio-political themes set out in first single, War On The Street.

Inspired by Aotearoa’s political history, ‘Revolution’ pays tribute to Māori who fought in the name of indigenous rights, and how their efforts became a blueprint for protest for future generations.

“The NZ Land Wars, Parihaka, the 1975 Māori Land March, Bastion Point, and more recently, Ihumātao, inspired me to finish a song I had written four years earlier,” Ed says, “It reflects the sentiment I felt learning of this history, and how these events aren’t taught in our education system.”

The song’s video features footage from Bastion Point, the anti-nuclear and anti-apartheid protests of the 1980s, and Ihumātau.

“In some ways I wanted to draw comparisons to the present-day Aotearoa and the conflicts we still face, and how they can be resolved peacefully.”

Ed is backed on ‘Revolution’ by top-shelf NZ musicians Marika Hodgson (Bass), Finn Scholes (Piano, Organ) Andy Keegan (Drums) and Carey Garland (Backing Vocals) and is produced by Andy Lovegrove, (Producer, Mixing Engineer, Backing Vocals) who collaborated on Ed’s previous releases ‘No Enemy of Mine’ and ‘Crazy’.

‘Revolution’, the second single from Ed Waaka’s forthcoming EP is out now on Spotify, Apple Music and iTunes and is released with the support of NZ On Air.
