8:15 Andrew Dalziel

Andrew "the Doctor" Dalziel is a photographer and former sound engineer for the Saturday Morning programme. He spent three months cycling through Japan, and arrived in China just before the Olympics. He cycled from Tianjin into Inner Mongolia, and is now in Shanghai. You can view some of his photos here and here.

9:05 Lonnie Thompson

Lonnie Thompson is a 2005 US National Medal of Science laureate, and Distinguished University Professor in the School of Earth Sciences at Ohio State University. He achieved global recognition for drilling ice cores from mountain glaciers and ice caps in the tropical and sub-tropical regions of the world, and was scientific adviser for the documentary film An Inconvenient Truth. He and his wife Ellen Mosley-Thompson, a Professor of Geography (Climate and Atmospheric Sciences), run the ice core paleoclimatology research group at the Byrd Polar Research Center at Ohio State University. They visited the University of Otago from 22 to 24 September to deliver the public lecture, Understanding Climate Change: Past, Present and Future.

9:45 Rhys Morgan

Rhys Morgan is a writer, cartoonist, music video producer, radio host, and DJ who works with the production company Sticky Pictures Ltd. Rhys writes, directs and edits The Truth, an animated segment that features in The Gravy, the creative culture television show which won the award for Best Information/Lifestyle programme at the 2008 Qantas Film and Television Awards, and was the first nomination and winner for the Freeview digital platform. The second series of The Gravy is currently screening on TVNZ6, and will be followed by series three which is currently in production and will air over summer.

Actor, director and writer Steven Berkoff has been a dominant force in the British theatre scene for 40 years. He visits Wellington for the first time (15-16 October), and returns to Auckland (17-18 October) with his new show, One Man. It consists of two short plays: Tell Tale Heart, Berkoff's adaptation of the story by Edgar Allan Poe; and Dog, an original piece describing a day in the life of a football hooligan and his dog.

Self-styled "geek chick" and "mobile technology wrangler" Brenda Wallace develops open source code for mobile applications at Catalyst IT Ltd, building mobile systems for telecommunications companies. She blogs at coffee.geek.nz, runs LinuxChix NZ (a community for women who like Linux, and for women and men who want to support women in computing), co-founded the monthly software developer picnic known as SuperHappyDevHouse, works with GeekSpeakr to find technical women to speak at events, and was a finalist in the Open Source Use for Community Organisations category at the New Zealand Open Source Awards 2008 for her "tireless work with open source communities".

Fleur Sullivan has been the undisputed matriarch of South Island cuisine for nearly forty years, ever since she established Dunstan House and then Oliver's, her Provencal-style Kiwi restaurant and lodge at Clyde in the heart of Central Otago. She is the owner/operator of a waterfront restaurant in Moeraki on the Otago coast, which is now the subject of a new book. Fleurs Place, by Paul Sorrell with photos by Graham Warman (Penguin, ISBN: 978-0-1-4-300860-6), combines recipes by Fleur, photographs of the scenery of coastal Otago and the Moeraki area, and information on the restaurant and local suppliers.

Kate De Goldi will begin an ongoing discussion on the influence of children's books editor Ursula Nordstrom. She will talk about Dear Genius; the letters of Ursula Nordstrom, edited by Leonard S Marcus (HarperCollins, ISBN: 9780064462358), and the novels of Meindert DeJong, illustrated by Maurice Sendak. These include The Wheel on the School (1954), The House of Sixty Fathers (1956), Shadrach (1957), and Journey from Peppermint Street (1968). Kate De Goldi's new novel, The 10pm Question (Longacre, ISBN: 9781877460203) is published this week.
