A twisted brick ruin - Homebush, the 6th generation property belonging to Jim and Louise Deans, became an emblematic image worldwide, for the massive New Zealand earthquake centred near Darfield, North West of Christchurch, this September.
Deborah Nation dusts off historic interviews with the celebrated Canterbury family, made on location, over the last 60 years.
Health Camps began in New Zealand in the late 1920’s as an “experiment” conducted by Dr Elizabeth Gunn on gifted farmland just out of Bulls.
The Vault finds recordings of children and staff at Roxburgh Health Camp- in which the plate de jour was a form of hard bread called Scrunch, eaten daily for breakfast and dinner.
Everyone remembers when the Beatles came to New Zealand in June 1964. Police were totally unprepared and the crowds went wild… Or did they?
According to rarely heard archival material held in the Radio Sound Archives, the Beatles thought our crowds were rather tame, in comparison to the much louder Australian variety.
The four boys from Liverpool were nearing the end of their far eastern tour and during their 6 days in New Zealand interviews held in hotels and on planes often deteriorate into playful banter.
These days parents often question the need to vaccinate children…but 50 years ago, a vaccine administered as a pink drink in a little white cup, was hailed as a wonder drug…rescuing our children from the epidemic which had plagued the Nation….Deborah Nation reminds us of that time.
13 August 2010 - A touch of the exoticNew Zealanders once relied on the wireless for a touch of the exotic, and it often came in stories relayed back home by our soldiers overseas.
Lieutenant Brittenden of Christchurch shared, via the airwaves, the colourful experience of attending an Arab feast, complete with galloping horses, bands playing and dancing soldiers.
Joe Casey and Allan Reid went along to a traditional Japanese Tea house with microphone in hand, and a detailed description of the process was recorded.
Meanwhile Nina Golding offers beautifully dictated Viennese recipes, to round out this selection of the exotic.

Deborah Nation sees what she can pull out of the Radio Sound Archives on the subject of teeth.
Among her findings are a J Force Wartime recording by Major Fred Aikle about the nature of Japanese teeth, in which it is revealed that they do not suffer from tooth decay as much as we do, due to their simple diet and the different mineral content of their soil and water.
Searching the on line data base she rediscovers an interview with horse dentist Paddy Byrne, which involves putting hands into the horses mouth and noisy filing of teeth to round off the sharp edges.
Kiwis are renowned travellers. How else do we connect with a world which is largely so far away?
Ironically the written word takes centre stage as we delve into the Sound Archives, Nga Taonga Korero. Letters, read for radio, from hand written wartime correspondence, to a Valentine note placed on a pillow with a rose from the garden, get a fresh airing and hearing.

The grizzly process of whale hunting is captured in live recordings held in the New Zealand Sound Archives Nga Taonga Korero, along with the stories of father and son whalers Charlie and Joe Heberley.
Deborah Nation explores the transition from an industry based on killing whales to one which celebrates the magnificent mammal alive and well.
