A smartphone game designed by a New Zealand computer programmer became one of the top selling games in the world, within a few days of its release.

Game Planet New Zealand editor Matt McGuire, said the game, Blockheads, is the third highest selling application in the United States and has reached number one in several countries.

Hawke's Bay programmer David Frampton designed Blockheads, which allows players to create a world by turning basic materials such as timber and stone into tools.

Mr McGuire said Mr Frampton is one of the first New Zealanders to have achieved such success.

The only other is a football game which topped the iphone charts in Britain, by a subsidiary of a New Zealand company called Sidhe.
