Author Jane Austen is to feature on the Bank of England's next £10 note.
In April, the bank prompted a high-profile campaign against the prospect of having no women besides the Queen, on the British currency, after it had announced that Sir Winston Churchill would replace the social reformer Elizabeth Fry on the £5 note.
The decision to replace Elizabeth Fry prompted protests and discussions about female representation on bank notes, but Jane Austen was thought to have already been part of the bank's plans for the next new note.
The BBC reports that bank notes are redesigned on a relatively frequent basis, in order to maintain security and prevent forgeries.
Fellow writers William Shakespeare and Charles Dickens have appeared on bank notes in recent times. Dickens was on the £10 note and Shakespeare on the £20 note.
