US trade deficit wider

The US trade deficit widened in July as exports fell and imports of cars, trucks and motoring parts grew.

The Commerce Department said the trade gap rose 13% to $US39.1 billion compared with $US34.5 billion in June.

Imports of cars, trucks, motoring parts and engines rose to a record $US26.5 billion. The BBC reports much of that was supplied by US firms that have plants in Canada and Mexico.

July saw exports fall 0.6% from a record level in June as sales of capital goods, such as aircraft and engines slowed.
