Sales of motor vehicles are booming, with new commerical vehicle sales the highest for any November since 1981.

Figures issued by the Motor Industry Association (MIA) show registrations of commercial vehicles rose 40% in November to 2935, their third consecutive monthly record. The November increase from the same month last year follows a 33% rise in October.

Sales were also high for passenger vehicles, and registrations of new vehicles overall rose 21% to 10,388.

Toyota, Ford and Holden were the most popular makes in both categories, and sports utility vehicles represented 26% of all vehicles sales last month.

MIA chief executive David Crawford said the pace of commercial registrations had accelerated in recent months.

"It reflects the strengthening economy," he said.

"There have been quite a few economic commentators who have said recently that business confidence is high and we've been seeing this probably for seven or eight months but we've just noticed in the last two to three months it's really started to take off."
