Food and alcohol sales showed strong growth across the country according to the latest electronic transaction figures.

The figures from the leading card payment company Paymark also show shoppers and holiday makers spent up large in Otago and Southland during July.

The amount spent in the two regions went up 7.8 percent and 11 percent respectively, during the month which included the school holiday period.

Paymark's head of customer relations, Mark Spicer, said skifields, restaurants, cafes and accomodation providers all benefited.
