Online retail spending rises

The lower New Zealand dollar is having little impact on the country's overseas online spending.

The BNZ Online Retail Sales Report shows total online retail spending rose 11 percent in May, compared with a year earlier, and spending on overseas sites went up 23 percent.

Spending at New Zealand merchant sites rose just 3 percent, with grocery shopping accounting for the largest share of purchases.

BNZ institutional research director Gary Baker said the overall result was quite strong.

But he said it partly reflected softer sales in May last year.
