Total guest nights in short-term commercial accomodation fell in the North Island, but climbed in the South Island in August.
Statistics New Zealand says total guest nights were 2 million in August, on par with August 2008, but 4% down on August 2007 levels.
International guest nights grew 4% in the South Island in the year to August, and fell 7% in the North Island.
Seven of the 12 regions experienced an increase in guest nights: Otago and Canterbury recorded the largest increases, while the Auckland region recorded the largest decrease.
