Passenger numbers down at Wellington airport

Infratil is hopes more tourism promotion in Australia and cheaper and easier trans-Tasman travel will reverse a slide in patronage at Wellington airport.

The company says passenger numbers over April and May were down 5% on the same period last year.

But, in Britain, patronage at Glasgow Prestwick airport was 16% lower than last year, which Infratil says was largely due to disruptions from a volcanic eruption in Iceland.

Freight volumes there were also lower by 21.81%, but Kent airport had a modest lift of 1.38%)

However, Infratil's Greenstone Energy arm, which runs Shell petrol stations in New Zealand, says fuel sales are ahead of the same period last year despite

industry volumes being down.
