Barcelona - Qatar shirt deal announced

Barcelona has ended the football club's history of never using commercial shirt sponsorship. It has agreed to a deal worth £125 million with the Qatar Foundation.

For the past five years, Barcelona has paid UNICEF to display the charity's logo on its shirts.

Now UNICEF's logo will sit next to that of the Qatar Foundation, a non-profit organisation in the Gulf state which will host the 2022 World Cup.

The BBC reports the deal will be worth £25 million per year from next season until 2016.

However, Andy Green, an analyst who specialises in football finance, says it's a tragedy for the Barcelona football club's image, but a financial necessity.

Barcelona has substantial debts: in July, an audit revealed Barcelona's debt to be £369.5 million after a loss of more than £64.36 million in the 2009/10 season.

Barcelona said the deal "represents a record level of revenue" for a football club and has more value still in the current economic climate".

The BBC reports Liverpool, Manchester United and Real Madrid each earn about £20 million per year for their rights, while Bayern Munich make almost £23 million.

Foundation's role

The Qatar Foundation is concerned primarily with education projects in the Middle East.

It is chaired by Her Highness Sheikha Mozah Bint Nasser Al-Missned, the wife of the Emir.
