No probe into mobile roaming rates

The Commerce Commission says it won't investigate whether price controls should be imposed on mobile phone providers to use each others networks, now that Two Degrees and Vodafone reached a deal.

The commission had considered launching a probe into national roaming to ensure new players could compete and grow fairly, but held off while Two Degrees sought an agreement to use Vodafone's national network.

The competition watchdog says Two Degrees has told it the deal allows it to compete, and no investigation is now needed.

Separately, the Commission says the cost of providing a free local calling service for the June 2010 year has been delayed until legal action is settled.

Phone number portability has been extended for another six years.
