2:10 pm on 15 March 2011

Australian-owned ASB Bank has appointed New Zealander Barbara Chapman as its new chief executive.

Ms Chapman has completed a five-year secondment with ASB's parent company, Commonwealth Bank of Australia in Sydney, where she headed human resources and group services.

She's described as a career banker, having spent 12 years as a senior executive at ASB.

Ms Chapman will also become a non-executive director of Sovereign Assurance's parent company, ASB Group (Life), and will take up these positions on 26 April.

She replaces Ian Park, who has been acting chief executive over the past four months.
