Stocks on Wall Street were mixed on a day of light trading following the Independence Day public holiday.
The Dow Jones Index fell 13 points to 12,570. The Nasdaq Composite was up 10 points at 2826.
In Europe, FTSE 100 in London rose 0.1%, the DAX in Frankfurt was down 0.1% and the CAC-40 was down 0.6%.
In Tokyo, the Nikkei rose 7 points to 9972.
The Australian 200 Index was down 13 points to close at 4598 on Tuesday. The NZX 50 fell 5 points to 3474.
At 8.04am on Wednesday, the New Zealand dollar was trading at 82.48 US cents, 77.15 Australian cents, 51.36 pence, 66.86 yen and 0.5718 euro. The Trade Weighted Index was at 71.13.
Earlier, Brent crude oil was trading at $US113.76 per barrel and gold was trading at $US1513.69 per ounce.
