Foreign investment in NZ rises

Total foreign investment in New Zealand rose in the year to March, but investment from China fell slightly.

Foreign investment rose by $12 billion to $300 billion in the year to the end of March, figures from Statistics New Zealand show.

The biggest increase came from Australia, which accounted for $106 billion of investment in New Zealand, a rise of $6 billion compared to the previous year.

Investment from China fell from $1.88 billion to $1.83 billion this year.

It was made up of $1.6 billion of mainly bank deposits and company loans and $200 million in other assets, including land, Government bonds and shares.

However a Statistics New Zealand spokesman says those numbers may not account for all the investment by China, as Chinese companies may invest via subsidiaries in Hong Kong or in countries such as Taiwan or Malaysia.
