The retailer Briscoe Group has announced a rise in its third-quarter profit, with the help of a short-term boost: the Rugby World Cup.

The owner of Briscoes Homeware, Rebel Sports, Living and Giving and Urban Loft chains, says its profit rose 9.15% to $98 million during the 13-week period to the end of October.

Sales at stores open at least a year rose 13.5% compared to the third quarter of 2010.

Homeware sales increased 2.04% and sporting goods sales

24.6% over the quarter.

Managing director Rod Duke says the rugby tournament was a win for them, and he's cautiously optimistic about seeing the same kind of sales over Christmas.
