Petition for Christchurch park given ceremonial farewell

Updated at 10:18 am on 1 May 2012

A petition calling for a reserve on earthquake-damaged land along the Avon River in Christchurch is being given a send-off from the city.

The Avon-Otakaro Network collected more than 18,500 signatures in support of the riverside park.

Former red zone residents will present the petition to Christchurch MPs Lianne Dalziel and Eugenie Sage at Parliament on Wednesday. Ms Dalziel is sponsoring the petition in Parliament.

The two bound volumes of the petition will be taken up the Avon from Shag Rock to the airport, where the document will be farewelled in a ceremony with Christchurch's mayor Bob Parker.
