Tenants from quake-prone units have new homes

Tenants forced out of a Christchurch City Council block of flats on Monday have been found new homes.

The 10 Airedale Courts tenants were told to get out immediately because of previously unseen earthquake damage that was found by engineers.

The flats were found to be just 15 to 25% compliant with the New Building Standard for seismic activity. Anything under 34% is deemed unsafe.

The residents have all accepted the council's offer of alternative homes in council-owned social housing complexes.

The council says they will be given help move their belongings if they need it.

Another 14 units found to be below standard at Airedale Courts were not occupied.

The six other blocks in the complex have been assessed and cleared.
