Christchurch was shaken by a 4.6 earthquake on Saturday night.
The quake, which hit at 9.15pm, was centred 15 kilometres south-west of Christchurch at a depth of 12 kilometres.
A police spokesperson in Christchurch says it was the strongest quake the police have felt since moving into their new building in December.
However, by 10pm there had been no reports of damage or injuries.
