Groundwater systems stable after quake

The latest survey of groundwater in Canterbury, carried out since the earthquake, shows no long-term change to aquifiers.

Canterbury Regional Council director of investigations and monitoring Ken Taylor says aquifier and well levels have now stablised in most parts of the region.

There had been concerns that the earthquake may have changed water supplies, potentially disrupting hundreds of farm wells and irrigation systems.

Mr Taylor says there is no evidence so far of any long-term effect on groundwater levels.

He says the council will carry out pump tests to see if there are any changes in the amount of water in wells.
