Cordons to be lifted in Christchurch's Cashel Mall

Cordons set up in a section of Christchurch's Cashel Mall will come down on Wednesday, allowing affected businesses to resume trading.

After a series of aftershocks struck the city on Boxing Day, the mall was closed between Oxford Terrace and Colombo Street, as well as parts of Gloucester and Manchester Streets, and Poplar and Ash lanes in the Lanes precinct.

Christchurch City Council says the cordon in Cashel Mall will be lifted from 6am.

However, inspection and enforcement manager Gary Lennan says unsafe individual buildings will remain cordoned off, with the council issuing repair notices to building owners.

Ballantynes Department store, which closed in the wake of the aftershocks, will also reopen on Wednesday.
