Fire Service advises caution when power restored

The Fire Service is urging people to take extra care when turning power back on in their homes.

Urban Search and Rescue spokesperson Paul Baxter says fire crews have had to deal with some fires in the past day that could have been avoided.

Three out of five fires in 24 hours were related to power being restored, he says, and they resulted in injuries.

Mr Baxter says if people have any doubts, they should switch power off and seek help from an electrician.

He says they have sufficient resources to deal with all calls, and have 11 fire crews moving through the entire city with police and civil defence.
