State of emergency extended another week

6:17 pm on 1 March 2011

Civil Defence Minister John Carter says the national state of emergency will be extended for another seven days.

Mr Carter says the declaration of a state of emergency needs to be renewed every seven days to legally stay in effect

He says the declaration gives Civil Defence staff the authority to direct and co-ordinate resources to respond to the earthquake. The state of emergency will continue for several more weeks but does not have any direct impact outside Christchurch.
