About 80% of the silt left by liquefaction in the earthquake has been cleared.
Civil Defence says about 220,000 tonnes of silt have been removed so far - about 50,000 tonnes on Thursday alone.
In the earlier quake on 4 September, only 35,000 tonnes of silt had to be removed.
