The New Zealand Red Cross says it has so far received 800 applications for grants from its earthquake relief appeal.

By Friday, the appeal had raised $13 million and more was expected from overseas appeals.

In Australia, the Red Cross has raised $6 million. Appeals are also being held in the United States, Britain, Ireland and Japan.

The Red Cross says application forms have been sent to relief centres in Christchurch and are available electronically.

Once applications are received, the turnaround time is expected to be between two and three days.

The Red Cross has also opened applications for bereavement grants available to the next-of-kin of people who died in the quake on 22 February.
