Trees come down in Hagley Park, Botanic Gardens

Christchurch City Council began felling trees in Hagley Park on Tuesday which were damaged in February's earthquake.

Twenty-four trees near the Armagh Street car park entrance to the park were to come down after council staff identified severe root damage which poses a significant safety risk to the public.

Several trees have already come down because of damage caused by liquefaction and ground movement following the February quake.

Trees also fell in the Botanic Gardens, and an assessment of the tree stock has identified several trees which require removal for safety reasons.

The trees will be replaced.
